The first make of our Yule Craft Yourself Joyful series is a big ode to Salem! Each project in this three part series embraces the practice of using crafting and making as an act of celebration. This DIY Christmas and Yule Ornament celebrates the feeling of excitement by recreating an iconic Salem landmark using the spices of the Yule season. Follow along to make a Salem Witch Museum ornament using a cinnamon dough! And craft your very own incarnation of that breathtaking red stained glass window using a Jolly Rancher.
Add ¼ cup applesauce, ½ cup cinnamon, 1 tsp each of nutmeg, ginger and cloves and ¼ glue to a bowl. Stir until the dough just comes together. Then knead the dough until it stops sticking to you, about 1 minute. This recipe will make 2 ornaments if you squeeze them together or 1 ornament with some left over for other creations.
Print the Salem Witch Museum template and cut it out. This template is just a base for your design! Not crazy about the side windows? Don’t include them. If you'd rather have straight edges, just ignore those little indents on the side walls.
You can either cut the windows from the paper now or poke through the paper with a toothpick when you are working with the dough later. It's up to you!
Place the dough on a sheet of wax paper. You can either roll or press out the dough so that it is a quarter of an inch thick. If you are rolling it, add another layer of wax paper on top of the dough while rolling.
Place the paper template on top of the dough and use it as the guide for creating the ornament. I found that a butter knife worked really well for the outside edges and a toothpick for the windows.Smooth the edges of the ornament using your finger or the toothpick.Optional: Use a straw to a poke a hole on the highest part of the ornament for adding a string. The finished piece is also heavy and bulky enough to sit nestled in the tree without a string, if you'd rather go that route.
You can either place the ornament in a 200° oven for 2 to 2.5 hours or let it air dry for 3-4 days. Leave the ornament on the wax paper to dry. If air drying, turn the ornament over once a day. You will be able to tell when the moisture has left the dough by the color of it. When dry, the dough will be a uniform color. If you are seeing darker spots, it's still wet.
Preheat oven to 250°. If your oven runs a little hot, turn the dial to just under the 250° mark. Break the red hard candies into small pieces. I used a little rubber mallet for this, but no matter what method you go with, you should aim for a nice variety in the size of the pieces. With your ornament on the wax paper, add the candy pieces to the windows, filling each space as much as you can.
Put the ornament in the heated oven on wax paper. Keep a close eye on it while heating. You want to bring it out as soon as the candy has melted into a flat sheet. You may want to add more candy pieces as it melts to fill out the windows. If you notice air bubbles, you can pop them with a toothpick while the candy is still very hot.
Remove from oven and let cool.
After the ornament has cooled and the candy is no longer tacky to the touch, your ornament is done! Add the string through the top if you chose to punch a hole. Now enjoy this festive touch of Salem for the rest of the season! I'm actually thinking I'll do a different Salem landmark every year.
